1960s Vintage Fashion: Classic glamour and Swinging London

Eine Frau in einem schwarz-weißen Sixties-Mod Kleid vor Op Art Hintergrund

Do your own thing: The fashionable 1950s already boasted a wide range of styles, but the Swinging Sixties went even further. Youth culture defined the look of the decade, influencing Haute Couture designers and making its way into mainstream fashion.

Rock'n'roll and Hollywood bombshells like Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield were still influential at the beginning of the decade, but style icons like Twiggy or Patty Boyd introduced new shapes and cuts: after Mary Quant invented the mini-skirt, androgynous A-line mod dresses were breathtakingly short, and the newly available coloured tights showed off pretty legs instead of bust and waistline. Colourful prints were everywhere and got more and more creative as the Sixties advanced.

Haute Couture designers such as André Courrèges and Emilio Pucci experimented with psychedelic patterns and synthetic materials, inspired by new technologies such as space travel. Yves Saint-Laurent reigned supreme and made pantsuits and tuxedos socially acceptable for women.

On the other hand, ladylike chic was epitomized by film star Doris Day and First Lady Jackie Kennedy: Clean-cut tailored suits with short jackets, a pillbox hat and matching gloves - still a timeless well-dressed look today.
