From Coco Chanel to Gatsby: The "Roaring Twenties" really changed the fashion world! Style icons like the legendary Coco Chanel come to mind, but 1920s fashion has so much more to offer.
Besides her famous "little black dress", which has become a timeless classic, Chanel designed sailor blouses and straight, loose-fitting dresses (her signature Chanel suit made its appearance in the 1950s). 1920s fashion celebrated the "garçonne" look with its easy-going mixture of masculine and feminine elements, inspired by Victor Magueritte's book "La Garçonne", published in 1922.
For the first time in history, women left the house without a corset, some courageous ladies even wore trousers ... and short hemlines showed a scandalous amount of leg. The flapper style was born! Some of the shorter styles were due to material restrictions after the war - but at the same time, the new fashion of the 1920s gave women a degree of freedom and comfort never seen before.
After the austerity of the war years, people were craving beauty and opulence. That's why they liked to sparkle and shine when they celebrated: festive flapper dresses and long evening gowns in the Gatsby style of the 1920s use gorgeous fabrics, glittering rhinestones, pearls, gold or silver embroidery and fringes to make an impression. Ladies decorated their freshly-bobbed hair with cloche hats, headbands and elaborate headdresses with rhinestones, sequins, pearls and feathers. Hollywood actresses like Greta Garbo and Fay Wray, bohemian lady Zelda Fitzgerald, silent movie stars Pola Negri and Gloria Swanson, and dancer Josephine Baker were the style icons of the time.
